From a young age, we’re led to believe that dairy is a harmless by-product. But when award-winning actress, Miriam Margolyes, realised what really happens on dairy farms across Britain, she felt compelled to take action.

Just like humans, cows must give birth to produce milk. That means that every single one of the 2.6 million cows who are killed in the UK each year for their meat and milk will endure the same gruelling existence.

Thank you for addressing this situation. I worked near a cattle farm where they separated the mother and baby calf after several weeks and the three day crying of the mother devastated me. I never could understand this procedure. There must always be a better solution.

Where I grew up, they separate them for a little while and after milked, the babies go with their mums all day .we do not milk them all the milk, we share just like how we share plants with cows .the cows get pregnant on their own time .This is sad what happen in milk industry .now I will have to think about this video .

Thing is milk goes into everything from creamed rice to bakery products.

Many years ago I was taken to a farm in the country for a holiday. I was a child and my mother and I could not get over the pitiful sound of cows and calves calling to each other all day and all night because they had been separated. This was just on an ordinary farm, not a huge industrialised one, but we hadn't realised what went on.

In my father's country after morning milk they let the baby cow with their mum rest of the day. And even at night mum cow and baby calf sleep together but do put a baby calf mouth guard .

I was told by a farmer's wife, and said that she couldn't sleep the night they took the mums away....

A major switch from cow milk to plant milk would mean areas of grazing would have to be switched over to plant monoculture. There's far more biodiversity in a field of grass than in one of oats and not all pasture is suitable for growing plant crops.
As for almond milk, the vast swathes of almond orchards in California, where most of the world's almonds are grown, are having a terrible impact on the environment there. They are taking up too much of the state's water supply, leading to drought elsewhere in the state.

Miriam, I am so glad you are speaking out for these unfortunate animals, I didn't know entirely about their cruel practices, I now intend to buy coconut, almond, & oat milk!

This is the reason I am vegan, for the innocent animals. And I love Miriam even more than I already did for speaking out for them. 👏☮️❤️🐾🌱💕🐄💚🙏

Miriam, I too have just seen TV programme on this subject and I'm disheartened and disappointed with what's going on. I also have seen a programme showing a calf being dragged away put in a van and the mother frantically trying to save her calf, going round and round the van and almost gets hit by the vehicle. This I found soul disstroying.

I've been vegan for 32 years and Im 51, I'm doing great and have no regrets! Not many people realize that the dairy industry relies on subsidies. Other businesess that are far more important (and ethical) have failed whilst all the subsidies have been wasted on the dairy industry. Why prop up a dying, unethical industry that is a shambles business wize when the money was needed else where? We dont actually need the dairy industry when there are so many great alternatives (with more business sense).

Not all diary farmers separate calf from mothers, I admit they are in the minority. It's not the cow it's the how.

I lived in a village in Derbyshire farming country I hated the sound of the mother cows calling to her stolen baby it was sickening, they even put the calves in crates in a village in Rowsley Derbyshire, something I thought had been outlawed !!!

When i found out the cruelty of separation i stopped consuming all dairy products. They are impregnated at 2 years old. If anyone ever finds the book "the extended circle" read it if you care about animals. I cannot remember the name of the author so please let me know if anyone finds that book.

I'm so pleased that you are speaking out about the terrible abuse & cruelty related to the dairy industry. I too didn't realise how it all worked. As soon as I realised I became plant based, that was 4 years ago. We need people like you to explain and promote plant based to stop this cruel, thankyou x
