Supreme Court's Corrupt Financial Ties To Billionaire Exposed During Senate Hearing

Показать описание
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) used a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Supreme Court ethics on Tuesday to discuss the financial ties between Justice Clarence Thomas and conservative billionaire Harlan Crow.
Whitehouse cited a recent ProPublica report that found that Thomas and his wife, Ginni, have accepted lavish vacations and other gifts from Crow over the past two decades.
The report also found that Crow's companies purchased three properties from the Thomases for more than $100,000, but that Thomas did not disclose these transactions on his financial disclosure forms.
Whitehouse argued that Thomas's failure to disclose these gifts and transactions raises serious questions about his ethics.
"The Supreme Court is the most powerful court in the world, and it's essential that its justices be held to the highest ethical standards," Whitehouse said. "Justice Thomas's failure to disclose these gifts and transactions calls those standards into question."
Whitehouse called on the Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate Thomas's financial ties to Crow and to recommend reforms to the Supreme Court's ethics rules.
The committee's chairman, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), has said that he is open to considering reforms to the court's ethics rules.
