There are moray eels around Japan. See the Tsukiji episode on anago (another kind of eel) and when they were catching the anago they also got a few moray eels as well (which they threw back). THOSE would hurt if they bite. And they probably do hang around old wrecks and reefs.. I wonder if the ship really had been torpedoed, the water looks terribly shallow for aerial torpedoes. Maybe they used bombs. Or maybe it was torpedoed in deeper water and made its way into the bay.
