Jordans hi, hope that you are good. Please say shortly, on 3:11 minute you say "when I turn machine and come back" please explanation. Where you come back? You mean that you when going back then forward you do not go in the same exact line as before, you after every going forward move it a bit on the side then go back?

Would you always use a drum sander no matter the condition of the floor? Also, is a sealer necessary? The water based varathane I purchased doesn’t mention sealer

Hey, thanks for the video! If my understanding is correct sanding is necessary even for freshly installed floors, why is that?

The process should not be the same for all floors. All floors are different and should be treated that way. Have a default grit progression for all jobs would also be incorrect. In your case as you mentioned you start all your jobs at 40 grit. When in reality in order to know what grit you are going to start with, you must fist know what grit you are going to stop with and go backwards from there. For instance if you're going to stop your big machine at 80 grit just as an example. Back up two grits to 50 grit being on the HUMMEL. Make a few passes and see if the finish is being completely removed and that the floor is flat. If it is, then simply continue with 40 grit. If not, jump back one more grit, make a few passes. Make sure all the finish is coming off and the flooring is flat. Head towards lower grits as needed. And not as a default. On all cuts except the final cut tilt your machine at 10-15 degrees. The next cut tilt it 10-15 degrees to the other side. Final pass runs with the grain in order to re direct the scratch pattern. Angel cutting the flooring gets the floor flatter. As well as reduces dish out. Which is seen especially on the more open grain lumbers and most softwoods especially with knots. Going from 40 -80 grit is skipping 50 and 60 grit. Skip only one grit. You claim you don't have that big an issue. The issue is 80 grit will not remove all the 40 grit marks. You "in most cases" won't be able to see what the 80 grit cant remove of the 40 grit. On a microscopic level what the 80 grit can not remove is indeed evident. While you may be thinking, "who cares at a microscopic level" In reality with the over all look of the job shows when sanded while not skipping more then one grit. Additionally how well the finish adheres and stays in tact over time depends on the flooring being sanded correctly. On the end grain walls you're not clocking the edger correctly in order to reduce edger marks. You applied waterbase finish onto the floor without the use of a sealer. Bona Kemi products require a sealer for a number of reasons. 1) To prevent side bonding. 2) To prevent panelization. Would be just two of the reasons to use a sealer. Bona Traffic Naturale is a finish, not a sealer. There are no two part sealers. When laying out waterbase products, you should hot coat two coats on the same day. Let that second coat go over night. The next day buff and apply the final coat.

Supposed to go at an angle with drum sanders. At LEAST 15 degrees.

What’s your feeling between the drum sander vs the random orbital sander? DIY here

Congratulations on posting your first flooring video! Quick question on your sanding grits. What grit did you use on your buffer (the one you forgot to record) after the 80 grit sanding? New sub here.

I just had my floors done (by a contractor). The end result is not perfect. There’s a significantly darker area all around the floor (approx. 4-in wide), as if they cut in around first when applying some of the coats and the middle section didn’t get as much? I'm juste speculating here, but I try to see if that’s somewhat normal to get an uneven look like this for a new floor of if I should complain. They said they used a semi-gloss water based finish.
