Hi, it's Beatriz Godoy again here from Davis & Associates. I wanted to talk to you all about citizenship and the importance of taking that final step.

A lot of people unfortunately get stuck at the green card level or stage and the green card is a wonderful thing, I'm not trying to devalue the green card status, but it should not be your last step in the immigration process. At the end of the day, the green card can be revoked, it can be terminated, you could lose or abandon your green card, so it is important to take the last step and become a US citizen.

So if you have the time because you have to have at least as a minimum requirement for most cases, you have to have five years of green card status in order to qualify.

There are some exceptions, for example if you're married to a citizen you can apply at the three-year mark but if you're applying at the five-year mark and you have the five years, does that automatically mean that you should be taking this step? Absolutely not, you should get an immigration attorney to review your case to go over all of the other things that get taken into consideration in determining whether a citizenship should be approved.
There is the good moral character requirement, so they take a look at criminal history, whether you're a responsible individual and maintaining your loved ones, your children, if you've paid your child support, if you've paid your taxes.

So there are a lot of issues that can come up in this process, and they take a very good close look at how you got your green card and kind of review all of that all over again.

So definitely something to consider doing, but to do so cautiously and definitely with a professional's help.

Here at Davis & Associates we help individuals become citizens and throughout this process we guide them, and we're with them, so please give us a call today for your first free consultation
