really really good tips here, I never would have thought about having players build their characters collaboratively, but it makes complete sense and streamlines things for the DM.

Dude you were super on point, I was literally saying out loud "YEESSS" when you brought up making characters all together, because I've experienced exactly as you've said in those conditions, it's really fun! I find it silly how when people are alone, they tend to follow those tropes of creation for mechanic purposes usually, rather than finding ways to combine together.

It's fun to find good content creators when they're still small, it's like getting to be there for the parts of the beginning :)

Hi DM Smith, thanks for this helpfull video. And a late thank you for the shadow isles video and the Villemaw SB. I've been thinking about a society that would be coexisting with dragons and I thought that maybe you would like to make How to train your dragon stats blocks. I've never seen them done and I would love to see your attempt at it. Keep the good work, love the variety you're starting to make in your videos

Good stuff! Session 0 is especially important for new players and players who have never played together before.

We never had nor needed a session zero back in the day. We just got together and played the game.

While I agree that these points need to be discussed, I feel like I must add: That should all happen before you sit down at the table together!
The exception, for me, is character making. Here, I find the best solution to just hand-out character sheets that leave some blanks for the players to fill in as we go (name, gender, maybe proficiencies), but are mostly premade. The "fluff"
part of character-making, which is the bigger part, will happen during the game anyway. It is perfectly okay to ask your elves if they are related when they are already on the road!
If you start the game with an impromptu group therapy (even though noone is a qualified psychologist), the players will, at best, not return for the
next session.
