Are we alone in the universe? NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is developing a revolutionary new robot that could finally answer that age-old question. Meet the Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor (EELS), a self-propelled robot that's being crafted for a mission to Enceladus, one of Saturn's 83 moons. Enceladus is known for its icy surface that's both the whitest and most reflective in the Solar System and it's believed that there's a liquid ocean under the surface. EELS is specifically designed to slither its way through vents on the moon's surface and investigate the ocean below.
Constructed from segments and featuring first-of-its-kind rotating propulsion units, EELS is a snake-like robot that can grip surfaces and move underwater to get to its destination. As the robot travels, it will capture the world in 3D and send real-time video to operators. Its body will be capable of carrying and deploying a science payload that will measure subsurface pressure, electric conductivity, and temperature.
At 16-feet and 220-pounds, EELS is currently undergoing extensive testing in different environments to make sure it's ready for its mission. With its unique features, it could very well be the key to unlocking the secrets of Enceladus and showcasing the potential of extraterrestrial life.
