Neutral Sweden, Switzerland Unite With Europe In Defense Against Russia

Sweden and Switzerland, countries with a long history of neutrality, are teaming up with much of Europe in uniting with Ukraine to help with its defense against Russia. NBC News' Alex Seitz-Wald reports on why this European unity is so significant.

Sweden has the 4th highest weapons-export per capita in the world. All of it is top quality weapons and equipment that even the US buys and uses. Not in 83 years have they ever aided a country in conflict, and even then it was Finland whom they share a huge amount of history with. This is prodigiously large.

Somehow, I figure Putin had the desire to DIVIDE the EU, instead the EU has been united like never before. As a Dutch man myself, I am glad that the Netherlands too is able to help Ukraine in these hardships. I just wished we - Europe and the rest of the world - could do more to fend off Putin's forces from Ukraine...

I am Swiss...I feel very relieved that my government is doing the right thing here. It's just not possible to always stay out of everything and respecting the integrity of a sovereign democratic nation is also in our own interest. I also think that it is in a way a more neutral position to enforce the EU sanctions as well rather than being an island in the middle of Europe where Russia can circumvent some of these sanctions.

My wife and mother-n-law were both Swedish. When I heard Sweden wasn't getting involved while so many Ukrainians were dying, trying to get out, and all and any suffering, I could just see them having a breakdown about it. I am so glad to hear that Sweden is doing something, anything, because I know those two ladies would be so much happier this way, and I am sure many more Swedes must feel the same way. 🇸🇪🇺🇦☮️✌️🕊️🇺🇸

Fact - Sweden was neutral before switzerland.
And as a swede, im proud of the goverment to help Ukrain.

Sweden became neutral in 1814 and Switzerland in 1815 so they both have been neutral in such a long time so this is a big deal. Sweden is also one of the biggest weapons manufacturer per capita in the world, so they can contribute a lot weapons and technology wise.

For context, Switzerland signed the Treaty of Paris in 1815, which is the document that keeps them neutral. They have broken that in 2022. So after 207 years, they have decided that this conflict is important enough to get involved. I know there have been many historical events within the past three years, but this is one I'm glad to see in my lifetime.

This is factually incorrect. European unity has been dramatically increased since brexit. The EU is more popular than it has ever been among its own citizens, that's BEFORE the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It's more true to say that European unity was ENABLED by brexit. We've finally rid ourselves of the one member that was ruining European unity.
