I've got a simpler explanation: It would be embarassing for Sanders to try to calm everyone and then see that they continue booing and hissing during the speeches that follow -- showing that he doesn't control anti-Hillary voters. The DNC knew that by putting Bernie on at the end, the day's events would conclude with cheering and clapping and give the false impression that everything was finally smoothed out. It's basic psychology. We do the same thing in marketing presentations -- you go through all the boring technical stuff in the middle and try to end with whatever gets people excited.
