The defect life cycle is a fundamental concept in software testing that outlines the journey of a defect from its discovery to its resolution. Understanding the different stages of the defect life cycle is essential for efficient defect management and maintaining a high level of software quality.

What is Defect Life Cycle?
Defect life cycle, also known as Bug Life cycle is the journey of a defect, which a defect goes through during its lifetime. When QA reports a defect, it must be fixed and removed from application. A defect passes through different stages before it is closed.

Defect Life Cycle States:
• New - When defect is found by QA and logged in defect reporting tool (like JIRA, Bugzilla, Asana, Mantis etc.), the “New” status of defect is not a confirmation if it is really a defect.
• Assigned - It is assigned to Developer manager / lead / direct to developer.
• Open - Developer analyze that defect, at this stage there are possible outcomes; e.g. Duplicate, rejected (not a defect, not- reproducible) or Deferred.
• Deferred - When a defect cannot be addressed in that particular release it is deferred to future release.
• Fixed – Developer fixed the defect and test it at their end to ensure that defect no longer exists in application.
• Re-tested: QA will retest the defect one it is fixed by developer.
• Reopened - When the defect is NOT fixed, QA reopens the defect, and will be assigned it back to developer
• Closed – and mark closed if it is working as expected.
