Bruce Castor, one of former President Trump’s lawyers in his second Senate impeachment trial, speaks about the constitutionality of the impeachment trial, which has been questioned by many Republicans because Trump is no longer in office. Democrats are arguing for the trial to proceed.
Castor focused on a key part of Trump’s defense: he can’t be removed from office if he is not currently in office. “President Trump is no longer in office,” he said. “The object of the constitution has been achieved. He was removed by the voters.”

The Trump defense argues that the Constitution states that impeachment requires the president be removed and disqualified — not one or the other — so moving forward with a trial would be invalid.
