So for everyone who confused, the alien actually came simply for teaching us, humanity, on how to converse with them, the advanced civilization, to make the next contact easier for us and themselves. But somehow when the woman learnt the language, she could "travel" through the her past and future. She ended up teaching alien language for the entire human race.

The woman is a linguist, and the whole premise of the movie is that, when you speak a different language, you begin to think differently. To the aliens, time is a singular point, it doesn't move forwards and backwards, it's all happening at once. As she begins to understand the alien language, she begins to think as the aliens do, and therefore is able to put herself at any point in her timeline/life, because it's all happening at once. She uses this to convince the Chinese general, who was planning on attacking the alien ship, to not attack, and thus saving the world. In real life, this would never work, because although time IS a singular fixed point in the FOURTH dimension, we as humans are a THIRD dimensional being and even if we could further understand time, we cannot traverse it with our minds simply because as third dimensonal beings we cannot interact with the 4th, while the 4th can interact with us.

It is one of those movies where you GET the point in the end. You watch it and then think you got it but then you really get the point only in the end. Very good movie if you are in to sci-fi, aliens, mystery.

Once she is able to understand the language, she gains the ability to see different moments in time, past and future. The language transcends time and space and is suppossed to be thee universal language, from what I remember of the movie. Interesting concept.

Spoiler : context of this film is, the allien Wants to make a contract with the human race to help him in the very distant future, even though they have very advanced technology and the ability to understand what time is. They really need the help of the human race in the distant future (don't know why they need us, but even when their friends are killed because of humans, they still ask for help). The film is great in my opinion, because the plot twist and story telling
