He is actually correct. When the first big wave of Italian immigrants arrived in the US, they were NOT considered white, but rather "Mediterranean". They were described in the press as “swarthy, ” and “kinky haired”.

Thank you, as an American of Italian/Sicilian descent I never got the whole “white” thing. My grandfather was so dark when he was born the doctor wrote “olive” as his skin color, true story.

My ancestors grew up in Irish ghettos, were absolutely not considered white, and now 100 years later I get to be lectured about being privileged :)
