Revealing Your Identity During a Stop and Search

Though the police have the right to conduct a random stop and search under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, you do NOT have to answer their questions. Remember, a stop and search is NOT an arrest, so you do not have to provide your identity, or prove anything before the police can release you. If they stop you because they suspect you have committed an offence, they must tell you about this - and provide details of the offence, before they question you.
