The key distinguishing feature used in the study was, from what little the holotype specimens could tell us, that Saurophaganax had unique notches on its vertebrae. Later some tail vertebrae and they discovered that Saurophaganax had unique lower tail vertebrae that were not found in Allosaurus, but were convergently evolved in large Tyrannosaurs. Along with the fact that its femur has a different shape to it than that of Allosaurus. As of right now there are currently 13 known Saurophaganax specimens, though most of them are pretty fragmentary. Currently there is a study being done on all of the known Saurophaganax material.

Bad news, Saurophaganax bones have been shown to belong to a sauropod.

Saurophaganax is something we need to see in the next season of Prehistoric planet. Mike

Alternative view: Of the billions of these animals that ever lived, a spattering of parts have been found. So size estimates for a whole race of animals are impossible. It's unlikely that the large specimen was an 'Andre the giant' because, if only 20 human skeletons are found millions of years from now, it's highly unlikely that Andre is the one they'd find. If only 10 random human bodies are found millions of years from now are they likely to be highly representative of the billions of us who ever existed?

I like how at 4.10 you mention sphenodonts and put a picture of a tuatara, the only living species left from the order Rhynchocephalia. I'm from Aotearoa (New Zealand) so just thought that was pretty cool. Edit: sorry I just nerded out over that.

Unlike Allosaurus, Saurophaganax was far more bulkier and its muscle that was responsible for running was poorly developed meaning it was quite slow but not as slow, (as fast as 8+ ton range Carcharodontosaurids) and for some reason it had both Allosaurid and Tyrannosaurid Chevrons, and what really makes it differ is that is had a massive back much like Acrocanthosaurus.

Rest in peace, Saurophaganax. Sadly new info suggests this guy is actually a sauropod. :(

just found your channel today, fantastic stuff! I love dinosaurs, I remember watching Jurassic Park when I was 10 and correcting all the inaccuracies like Velociraptors being Deinonychus. when you said Apatosaurus and Brontosaurus being two different species I did not know that and I clicked on subscribe. now to binge watch all the rest of the videos!

Just something I wanted to share I've actually helped uncover Allosaurus and also what is speculated to be part of Saurophaganax in southern Utah in a part of the Morrison formation. Not far outside of Moab and Arches National Park in an area what is known as the Copper Hills because of the high content of copper deposits within the dirt and rock. It's amazing how many Allosaurus are actually found in Utah hence why it's actually the state dinosaur, although I still think Utahraptor or Utahceratops make more sense.

Ok, I have a question actially, when did we (as humanity) have realised that birds are actually just dinosaurs?

The question of Dinosaur behavior is poorly framed since Every Dinosaur had different behavior.I think a lot can be learned by looking at birds.

If there where big Theropods in america, - I am more than sure that they also, or mabe bigger existed many other places on earth in the Jurrasic period etc. - We only know a sup er tiny fragment of the life back then. - Most of the animals back then did not become fossilised, or are gone, or mostly wil never be found... But animals like Saurophaganax and Torvosurus are stunning. - Hope some day someone can dig up a complete speciment of this extreme Carnivore... Thank you for the exellent video documentary.
