I have used both and ditched the 35 F2.
The 35 F1.4 is what I would call a character lens. It wasn't designed with perfection in mind.
The 35 F2 is a performance lens. It was designed with more attention to image I.Q
It is best to not think of these lens as the same, but in two different form factors. They are different lens that happen to share the same focal length.
The same can be said for 23mm F1.4 and the 23mm F2.
To this end, that makes a argument for owning both, but having different applications for both.
The class example is portraits..you don't always need/want a portrait to be so sharp it picks every single tiny hair. Sometimes a slightly softer look with better contrast and resolve produces the superior viewing image.

The 'chatter' and slow AF issues are hugely exaggerated. Especially once you factor in latest firmwares for both the lens and the bodies. I have very rarely missed a shot using the 1.4, even at 1.4. I've been offered the F2 with cash for my 1.4 and refused. They are different animals, those who cry about the 1.4 not having WR probably never go out to shoot in anything but ideal conditions anyhow. Photographers are such moaners. A bit of chatter ... lol, get over it, you shouldn't notice unless you regularly shoot funerals.

Recently traded in my 35mm F2 for a 35mm F1.4, Sure its slightly slower on AF, but man the difference between that F2 and F1.4 is pretty huge. I love the Portraits the 1.4 gives me. Also the F2 looks like a chode.

Hi Ken. How about an updated review/comparison on these lenses? The aperture chatter and auto focus on 1.4 should be addressed with firmware updates and newer cameras. I have both and on paper the 35/2 wins hand down. When it comes to deciding which one is the better lens, they both have their pros/cons and 35/2 seems to be a better lens overall. But I will always pick the 1.4 for reasons I can't explain.

i just took some product shots with my neglected XF 35mm 1.4. The photos are sublime. It's a keeper, and I forgot how sharp it is even on my X-M1

In your Fuji Book you mention the 1.4 having superior image quality than the newer f2. You claim the opposite (regarding sharpness at least) in this video though? What's the deal with that?
Thanks for the good content and especially your book!

Would be interested to see if you have the same assessment after the firmware update for both body and lens?

I understand that if you disable the prefocus option the aperture chatter goes away. Could you comment on that?

How does the f2 hold up for night shots?

Have you tested Zeiss Touit 32mm f1.8? There is a really good local deal on CL right now, and I'm tempted to try it out.
P.S. I've owned Fujinon 35mm f2 and totally loved it. It just got stolen a couple of weeks ago, so I'm looking for a replacement.

A lot of the 1.4's are selling used for a reasonable price. The F2 is not for sale used anywhere here in Denmark yet at least. Not that much on the Bay (EU)) either.
But yeah that noise is a bugger !

question: If i can get the f/1.4 for $120 cheaper than the F/2.0, which one would you recommend I get?

i think if you will set to a zone or a in a middle focus point, it will disappear. I had that too, but knowing that canon suggest to use a middle focus point in low light and teleconverters, i made made fuji like that, using a center of lens and focus point in that, and all that hunting was gone.

the 1.4 is a rendering, that's why you buy in the rest it falls behind. Photography: is it technique or art?

The 35 f1.4 still has AF issues with the x-t3?

Hey dude, quick question - is the 35mm F2 the same in picture quality as the X100T 23mm F2? I found the X100T was a little too soft in image quality which threw me off and now I'm looking to get a lens for a X-T10.

The 1.4 is better. Is it sharp?! Rendition is way better and better micro contrast. No app. shutter noises here...
