Christopher Kane, MD, explains how UC San Diego Health, the region's only academic medical center, improves people’s lives and shapes the future of medicine.

Academic medical centers (also called academic health centers) are university-based hospital systems that play a unique and valuable role in our nation’s health care system. These include:

- Delivering highly specialized care for complex conditions or rare diseases beyond the scope and expertise of community hospitals
- Developing new medicines and technologies to prevent and treat disease
- Teaching the next generation of physicians and other providers
- Serving as a safety net for the at-risk or underrepresented

UC San Diego Health is one of six academic medical centers within the University of California system.

Dr. Kane is the dean of clinical affairs for UC San Diego School of Medicine and chief executive officer of UC San Diego Health Physician Group.
