How to Start Seeds for Fall
Показать описание
Seed starting is not just for a spring garden! Around late June or early July (roughly 4-6 weeks before transplanting), I start to plan out my fall garden. It’s a shorter growing season so I don’t grow quite as many items. But by starting a few seeds indoors, they'll have the jumpstart they need so by August they can be planted!
------------------------------
For a fall garden, I use seeds that have a shorter growing season. The back of a seed package will indicate how many days to harvest so you'll want to take note of this. Shorter growing times allow for full growth before cold weather sets in!
Here's the process:
- Start with well-moistened soil. I use compressed peat pods or a seed starting mix. Both are light and allow tender roots to easily take hold. However, you don't have to use what I use. Whatever soil you're comfortable with is fine.
- Plant more than one seed per hole to ensure better germination. Place the seeds in the top 1/4 inch of soil and lightly cover.
- Cover the tray with a clear lid to create a greenhouse.
- Place under a grow light for at least 12 hours of daily light. Make sure the soil stays moist.
- Once the seedlings open and show visible growth, immediately remove the lid and place the grow light close to but not touching the seedlings. Remove any extra or unwanted seedlings at this point.
- During this time, allow the top of the soil to dry out before watering.
- Continue to monitor and move the light away from the soil as they grow!
A few minutes to plant seeds and your fall garden will be on its way!
