HELVELLYN via Swirral Edge. Catstye Cam, Whiteside and Raise

Parking at Glenridding, I take the old miners route up to Sticks Pass and the first summit of the day Raise. The swirling mist opens to give amazing views back down the valley and Thirlmere and Bassenthwaite Lake on the other side, before I reach the second summit of the day Whiteside. I continue climbing over Lower Man before hitting the summit of England's third highest peak, Helvellyn and stunning 360 views. After an extended lunch break, I descend down the notorious Swirral Edge, which is widely considered one of the most dangerous routes off Helvellyn, as well as a Grade 1 scramble, something I did not enjoy, before climbing the fourth and final summit of the day Catstye Cam. Dropping down over the summit, I pick up the valley path all the way back down to Glenridding, ending an almost 12 mile loop. A great days hiking in perfect conditions on one of the Lake District's best summits!

Great video Alan Wow you covered some ground including two of my favourite mountains. I love Helvellyn so pleased you decided to include it on your route ... you feel on top of the world up there and your filming shows them off incredibly well. The clouds add extra atmosphere just sitting there. Catstycam is right up there for me too .. my "go to" mountain for any time I want to " escape " from the real world. Loved all the fabulous views.. well done for conquering Swirral .... you must be superfit now with these massive hikes 😀

That would be a cracking place to live! We are in it too but never get a number! Dye till we die I say! Although your colour looks great. Well done on including Raise and Whiteside, think we did those by accident the very first time we climbed Helvellyn. Molly will love the rock n roll! Piccadilly Circus! Don’t fancy descending Swirral Edge again, we did it the first time and never again. We always ascend that route and return by the far less steep Striding Edge. The bum shuffle, pro move! Ah Catstye, lovely. Remember your video from there last year where you pointed out the crowds on Striding Edge! Nice to meet Ben! Cracking route that, great video 👍

Holy cow! That opening scene was awesome! Loved the little walk up through the valley - amazing views after just 5 minutes! (Though we enjoyed the cottage area as well!) Loved all of those little lakes & scattered about - how stunning!!
