I have done that trip a few times. A few comments: Go to the Arctic Ocean on the Canadian side. The Dempster Highway is just fine and you can camp right next to the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk. Don't expect 4 star restaurants and hotels. Supplies have to be brought in and it is a LONG distance / expensive. Great Craft Beer in Whitehorse. Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! So, why would you go? The scenery! Miles upon miles of the most beautiful vistas that you have seen in your life.

Just competed a 13, 117 mile drive from VA to SoCal, north to Anchorage AK via the Cassiar Highway, up to Fairbanks, then return via Top of the World Hwy and Alcan more direct across prairie provinces. Yes, it is remote and rustic especially north through BC into the Yukon. Yes, you should never let your gas tank get below 1/2. As long as your expectations are that it isn’t “destination” but “journey” based, and that while you may not like high prices for food, fuel and lodging, they are all part of the price of admission. It is a trip I’ve wanted to do for the last several decades, and my only regret is that my wife is no longer alive to enjoy the adventures on this earth. By the way, my rig was a 2016 Ram 1500 Hemi 4wd with the 32 gallon tank. I averaged 21.5 mpg over the entire trip and have the receipts to prove it . I never found the sign in Dawson Creek that signifies that “start”of the Alcan, but I did find the sign in Delta Junction that signifies its “end”. You are gutty guys to drive that Bimmer but it’s a car you’ve always wanted. I’d rather be in it that than in a F450 towing a 35 foot fifth wheeler up to the great north. That would not be fun. See ya.

Nice videos of your i8 trip. I like crazy long road trips in my M550i. Twin turbo V8 eats miles with ultimate comfort and fast performance.

Very cool series! This journey brings a sense of reality to the whole ALCAN Highway, demystifying old notions of what it might be like. Thank you for bringing us along...

My parents neighbor did the ALCAN in an early 80s Nissan pickup with a diesel I recall when they were planning and packing for the trip. They took two spare tires, tools and spares for the truck for fixing potential mechanical failures and a gas can for carrying extra diesel fuel. The truck had a topper on it so they configured the back for overnight camping. This was kind of an early overlanding setup.

The background at 1:27
Some say he has enough frequent flyer miles to circle the globe seven times, and he got that jumpsuit while on a recent court-appointed vacation.

He's NOT the Stig!
He just stayed in a Holiday Inn Express!

The other alternative you didn't mention is taking the Alaska Maritime Highway which is like a combo of ship & car. I did that coming back from Alaska & I consider it was an adventure. You have a nice room to sleep in fairly good food & stop at many places along the way to explore. I also so a Grizzly Bear at one stop, not one of those run of the mill Black Bears you saw along the way, heck you can see those right in Boulder some times.

From 1963 until 1970 my dad would to take us from Illinois to Alaska every year on vacation. Yes, once upon a time workers in America got more than a week or 2 of vacation a year. He drove us up in Ford F250, 360, 4 speed, 2 wheel drive and a home built camper on the back. Over the time he bought newer trucks, but always the same set up except I think 1 was a 390. That was back when the Alcan highway was rock and gravel. Dad, mom, my 3 bothers and 2 dogs. My dad said we stopped going because they started paving the Alcan and it was getting to civilized for his taste, but I think he was getting tired listening to us kids whine the whole way because we were bores. Lol

I'm sure I'll never get to that part of the world. Many thanks for bringing us along. I love following these sorts of trips and look forward to seeing your next adventure.

While I am a big fan of your channels, I disagree with you on some of your views.

We just got home yesterday (western PA) from a 8 week road trip to Alaska. Alaska has so much beauty. Almost everywhere you look is great beauty. And plenty of great dining options.

That being said, the drive up and down the Alcan is also beautiful. Northern BC rivals Alaska with its beauty.
Yes, dining options on the northern part of Alcan are limited.

We did it in a 6 year old F150 setup for camping in the cap, so that gave us options when the hotels cost too much. Basically most places on the northern Alcan are 0 or 1 star at 4 star pricing.

We did take a side trip to Tuktoyaktuk on the Artic Ocean. That was a trip of a lifetime. I recommend TLC to take this trip and document it. You will not regret it.

Welcome to Canada, where we are taxed left and right. Canada is very expensive, especially in the north. What you quoted wasn’t very bad. I seen worse during my travel

Watching this video while on a cruise ship. Ports of call in Sitka, Skagway, and Juneau. Alaska is beautiful but we didn’t get up close to the glaciers.

Just an update: did the border to Tok a week and half ago. Road is much better than the stretch between border and Whitehorse. Lots of newly paved sections and only a handful of potholes and gravel

I love my F150 with the 36 gallon tank for long road trips. Also, don't drive at night. You miss all the beautiful scenery and the chance of hitting large animals goes up.

13:01 I love how he's talking about the peak of the cuisine being hamburgers, while there's a sushi restaurant sign behind him.
