I've been very happily surprised by my move to BSD as my desktop in the last few years. Win10 and other modern "agile" developed software is so flaky that it drove me away and since I've been using BSD for my datacenter workloads since the 90's, I decided to make it my primary desktop as well. It took about 3 months to migrate everything (Photoshop was a pain in the arse), but the only thing I don't have running is my DAW and that's mostly because the machine that's on is still half reliable. I'm running the same software I did on windows, some natively, some the windows versions (like photoshop, winrar, etc), but overall, it's night and day difference in reliability. When I had a windows machine as the SMB server and a windows client as the workstation, my chances of my NLE video editor finishing a render were about 1 in 3 at best. Always the same shit. Weird file locking issues, temporary unresponsiveness that ended up crashing the render, etc, etc. Since I moved the entire workflow to BSD about a year ago, I haven't had a single render crash for any reason. It just works. It might be a bit of work to get set up, but holy cow was it worth the time and effort.

I moved from XP (2002-2002, only a few months) to Linux and from Linux to FreeBSD (2002-2004) for my desktop. Each time lead to things I liked and disliked and both transitions meant I lost access to programs. Some things such as gaming (depending on the games) still require Windows. Others I used boot discs for to run certain utilities for specialized tasks. I got used to some issues I could work around or live with as being better than where I came from.
Rosegarden (maybe it found its way over) and my electronic piano hooked up through MIDI worked under Linux but not FreeBSD. I think that 'may' have changed over the years but after a move and how things got arranged in my new place I don't have any practical way to connect the piano to the computer.
I also lost the non linear Linux video editor Cinelerra so off and on attempted to make a port for Cinelerra-cv on FreeBSD. Eventually after years I got it stable enough I did get some basic projects completed with it but had various issues that lead to the port not being ready for release. Another FreeBSD porter came along and got Cinelerra-gg in the ports tree; I still need to compare my work vs theirs and update them to current codebases to bring it back in the tree as it was removed due to python incompatibility+some compatibility that was addressed upstream as a library was updated if I recall.
I ended up creating a port to bring replicatorg to FreeBSD though never released it; it was necessary to use my Thing-O-Matic 3D extruder/plotter (people call these printers why?) though was not happy with that effort either so wasn't released. Now its in the state of 'uses python2' and there was no python3 compatible version of skeinforge ever made as that project was abandoned years ago. Other programs replaced it completely but I didn't yet figure out how to get them into a usable workflow so I still fire up my old port when something needs to be done.

Well Linux and fake linux (the one with systemD) are two different stories. True Linux (there is a group on telegram) without systemD is the real Linux and is free and fully featured. To make freebsd wotk you need to mix ports with packages from repos and even then not all the free software is available. I.E can i have butt to stream radio ? No i cannot!!! Butt is Posix and bsd friendly (i know the one maintainer). But even this piece of software is not available. The best thing about freebsd is it is an option in case systemD destroys linux. Then we can have freebsd as an alternative. Apart that servers without systemD have freebsd and openbsd on top of this list.
