BRIENZER ROTHORN - The Brienzer Rothorn (2348 m above sea level) is a mountain in the Emmental Alps, on the border between the cantons of Lucerne, Obwalden and Bern. Geologically it belongs to the wild horn cover and consists of limestone from the Cretaceous period.
"In 1838, the Flück brothers from Brienz ran an inn on the eastern slope of the Rothorn in the direction of the Eisee. Mules and sedan chairs were also used to get there and to the summit. On November 15, 1846, Johann Georg Kohl reached the summit with a guide. Only 4 days later the empty inn on the mountain burned down. Plans for a new hostel failed in 1854. With the support of the steamship company, a large inn was built in 1866/67. The ride to the house with 33 rooms, dining room, lounges and stables cost 15 francs. Due to a lack of visitors, bankruptcy followed in 1872 and a new operator also gave up in 1874. This house burned down in 1885.
The Brienzer Rothorn has been accessed from Brienz (Bernese Oberland) by the Brienz-Rothorn Railway since 1892. At first there was a makeshift restaurant because the construction of the hotel had been stopped due to lack of money. The Hotel Kulm, completed in 1894 with 32 beds, stands a little above the terminus. A new terrace restaurant was added in 1987. Today there are 100 beds. Since 1971, a cable car has been leading from Sörenberg even closer to the summit. In winter, this is the starting point for the ski area near the Eisee in the east of the mountain. This is reached through a long gallery, which allows winter-safe access.
The mountain inn Rothorn Kulm is located between the mountain stations of the cable car and mountain railway. In addition to two-bed rooms, it also offers eight-bed rooms and a dormitory for overnight stays.
Hikers mostly reach the Brienzer Rothorn from the south (Brienz) or from the east as a high-altitude hike with difficulty level T3 according to the SAC hiking scale coming from Brünig or Lungern-Schönbüel. The climbs on the north side, from Sörenberg, are steep and less frequented. Only about half of the mountain trail from Interlaken to the Brienzer Rothorn is officially marked. This Brienzergrat is long and exposed.
Thanks to its remote location north of Lake Brienz, you have an excellent view of the Bernese High Alps (including Rosenhorn, Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, Blüemlisalp) from its summit. Due to the proximity of the Augstmatthorn hunting ban area, there is a colony of around 170 ibex on the Brienzer Rothorn (as of 2011).
A new cable car is expected to replace the previous one at the end of 2023." (source: wikipedia)
