“I thought that it would be beneficial for me to be out here because when people see a brown face, it's much more welcoming. I go up, I can say, hey, I'm miss Tina, I'm a volunteer here. Here are the things to expect. And they're usually very thankful. And I always tell them, if you need anything, I'm sitting right here on the corner.”
ANNOTATION: In 2021, Tina Marshall founded the Black Abortion Defense League to serve as clinic defenders and provide support for women seeking an abortion.

“When I saw that kind of reaction, I said, we need more black people out here. We need more black people here in the parking lot being escorts, and we need more black people out here defending.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Tina Marshall, founder of the Black Abortion Defense League:
"The new bill will impact folks coming in from out of state, especially people, especially people in black and brown communities that are not as financially privileged as others."
ANNOTATION: Recently passed legislation banning most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy is set to take effect July 1 in North Carolina.

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Tina Marshall, founder of the Black Abortion Defense League:
“There are other folks that come out that I talk to and they just say, you know what, I already have one child I can't take care of. You know, I can't have another one. I know a couple companions that have been out here that have brought their partners in and they said, I already have ten kids. I can't have another one. There are all kinds of reasons, but I know I think for BADL, we will definitely try to help people and we'll probably have to have coalitions and collaborate with other groups because it's really it's going to be about money, raising money to help people with gas, hotel rooms, food, the cost of the abortion itself.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Tina Marshall, founder of the Black Abortion Defense League:
“I don't think that people should have to walk across a parking lot to jeers and to heckles and to taunt and through, and threats of hell or whatever to get their health care. That's why I'm here. That's why I'm here.”
STORYLINE:
A year after the U.S. Supreme Court ended a nationwide right to abortion, it is mostly not available in a swath of states.

But in most places where it is still widely accessible, there are new protections for access.

That provides ways to obtain abortions — though not everyone can access them.

Tina Marshall, the founder of the Black Abortion Defense League, talks about her organization's mission to assist women in getting abortions in Charlotte, N.C. as a recently passed state bill taking effect on July 1 will ban most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy.

The June 2022 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization was a seismic change for a hot-button political and personal issue in a nation that was already deeply divided.

I’m glad the states are making it stricter

What Tina says about the sidewalk advocates who are offering ultrasounds is a complete lie. There are no jeers, heckles, or taunts. Those people are offering free help to those women and families. When she says, "It's about money, " she's only talking about raising money for women to have an abortion. Abortion advocates don't raise any money to help any women have what they need for their families even though they know the need is there. So sad.
