Great acting here! Mike is an adolescent boy who came from a socially repressed mid-western family & El’s a teenage girl (temporarily without superpowers) who grew up in a very…unconventional environment. She wears her emotions on her sleeve.

Mike’s own parents didn’t love each other and due to this, Mike probably didn’t experience a lot of authentic love of at home. This is why he and Nancy always have such trouble expressing their feeling and love.
Mike is obviously insanely in love with El, he just struggles with expressing it

this scene is so authentic. we see the dynamics of mileven clashing. I hope we can hear ILY from Mike to El in volume 2.

I miss Mike from season 1 and 2, he was so selfless, cared about both his friends and girlfriend and didnt leave one of them in the dark, and he felt more connected with El, here he cant even say the most simplest thing

Don’t get me wrong, it is a very emotional scene but dear god that one line of “you can’t even write it mike” just sends me

Actaully yeah I can't remember him ever saying it to her.

Granted, they also used to say "friends don't lie" but that's all she did for a year.

The ' I say it . ' sounded insanely guilt-trippy to me and I feel so bad for El :(

for some people it's complicated to say i love you mike didn't grow up with parents who taught him how to say how he feels eleven i think should be able to understand that

El, Mike has a love language. He made you Eggos for you...at YOUR house! It's hard for dumb boys sometimes.

As someone who grew up in a home where "I love you" was never said, I completely understand Mike's struggles to even write it down. However, on the other side of things, not taking a risk to say it causes the other person to be insecure, which only worsens things (as we clearly see in Jane)

One of the most important human needs is assuring words/getting acknowledged for achievements. When a child doesn't get that growing up, they don't really know that it's a real thing... How are you supposed to know something you've never seen? When they grow up and eventually learn about physical/verbal affection being normal, it's very difficult to do it because it opens up that vulnerability they always closed up to, due to their parents. We can see throughout this show that Mike doesn't like expressing his emotions and feelings—being vulnerable. Most of the time he does, he's either really uncomfortable or says it without thinking in the spur of the moment (an example being the first time he said 'I love you' to El). Another example was when he didn't want to say the word in the mall and he kept on expecting El to just understand what he meant, or at the end when she says it to him and he doesn't say it back, even though he did once when he wasn't thinking. So yeah, it's a very hard thing and what Mike is doing is understandable. El doesn't understand this though and doesn't realise the difficulty it takes for him to open up. Another thing is when he hugged Will, or is awkward around him. He obviously knows Will has feelings for him, so he probably just decided to shut him off so he won't have to confront Will. After all, nothing does better at avoidance than distance.

Hopefully this show can rebound like this because season 4 wasn't all that.
