I have a smaller garden than yours, and this past summer it went almost completely to weeds and looked just horrible as I had to care for my mother who was sick with cancer. I was not really sorry about the garden at the time, because I was doing exactly what I needed to be doing. Watching you plant your corn and squash made me think of the three sisters method. Corn squash and beans all planted together. Corn provided support for the beans, the beans added nutrients to the soil and the squash shaded out weeds. It's a native American tradition. Those three were their main source of food throughout year.
