My arrangement/adaption of Für Alina (originally for piano) by Arvo Pärt for ukulele (x 2). Had a rethink about this piece at 2.15am... and decided I just had to try it with the 4th course tuned in octaves. My work-around was to tune the entire uke down a semitone to reduce the stress on the instrument (and probably Dave Morgan 🙂. So, the tuning is a#/A# C# E# A#. I think this sound rings better and like the octaves which are an attempt to compensate for the lost pedal notes.

Composed in 1976 this piece marked the beginning of Arvo Pärt's tintinnabuli (sounding bells) style. Basically the melody, or M voice, is harmonised by the triad, or T voice. I tuned the ukulele so the lower 3 strings are tuned to sound the open triad while the top string (mostly) plays the melody.

There are not may notes involved but I find this piece incredibly challenging to play. I feel as if every note is so tender, so pure, so frail the slightest wrong move may break the entire universe! It's a game of chess, a conversation, a convergence of two currents. It is sin and redemption, yin and yang, the marriage of heaven and earth. It's a tiny world where as Pärt says, 'every blade of grass has the status of a flower'.
