What about using pedals in front of the amp and the effects loop?

i have the conections of my pedals in the send an return the way they recomend and the output direct to the front of my amp, but when i use the delay or modulation effects with the distortion of my amp they sound weird.how can i make my delay and modulations run trough the effects loop of my amp
