Chinese Leader Xi Jinping to attend BRICS summit in South Africa followed by state visit

While South Korea, the U.S. and Japan accelerate their cooperation, China looks to be tightening its ties with the BRICS nations as its leader Xi Jinping travels to South Africa this week for a summit with those developing nations.
Jeong Eun-joo has the details.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping will travel to Johannesburg, South Africa on Monday on a trip intended to bolster Beijing’s influence among developing and emerging nations.
This is only Xi’s second international trip this year.
China's foreign ministry said Xi's three-day state visit will include a summit with leaders of the BRICS emerging economies.
The BRICS summit is the first to be held in person since 2019.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, however, will not attend in person due to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in Ukraine and will participate in the summit virtually.

Xi’s trip to South Africa comes just days after U.S. President Joe Biden met with the leaders of South Korea and Japan in a show of solidarity and force against rising threats from China.
The summit in Camp David saw South Korea, the U.S., and Japan deepen military and economic cooperation while criticizing China’s "dangerous and aggressive behavior" in the South China Sea.

With China and the United States locked in an increasingly intense rivalry, the BRICS has taken on greater strategic relevance to Beijing.
The Financial Times reported Monday that China will this week likely push the BRICS bloc of emerging markets to become a full-scale rival to the G7.
The bloc’s members – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – account for more than 40 percent of the global population, while South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has invited more than 60 heads of state and government to a summit in Johannesburg from Wednesday.
Officials familiar with the talks said several countries could be invited to join the bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
South African officials said 23 countries are interested in joining.

The summit also comes at a difficult moment for Xi, who is grappling with a myriad of domestic challenges ten months into his third term.
China’s much-anticipated economic rebound from its rigid COVID lockdowns is faltering.
The world’s second-largest economy is suffering from a spiraling property crisis, mounting local government debt, and worsening deflationary pressure.
