I think the power boost is actually only a small part of the awakening. In Buddhism a major goal in any reincarnation cycle is becoming an Arhat, someone who has essentially already experienced the suffering of death while still living and has gained the ability and will to stop reincarnating after death. By losing his fight with Toji, by not being able to protect Amanai with all the power in the world, by seeing how isolated and distraught Toji was, he understood the fleeting nature of strength itself and realized how stupid the power game was.

He feels wonderful because he knows he doesn't have to carry the weight of being "the strongest" anymore, it was made up. He was never an unstoppable force of nature, he was just a boy that had that idea thrust on him. When he finally dies he acts just like how a Buddha would act when they die, maybe slightly surprised, but still completely accepting of it, because they accepted their strength and life as temporary things to be handed over to others.

I mean, think about it. Toji's Heavenly Restriction probably gave him extra stamina in bed, that's why he was able to hook up with so many women after his wife died. And when Maki fully awakened her HR, her box grip strength probably at least doubled.

Let's not ignore the other side of the spectrum too, when Muta (aka Mechamaru) was born, his vegetable of a body probably had erectile dysfunction (if he even was born with a full penis). He was also probably born with several STDs, and some of which are unheard of.
