Показать описание
After a week of very heavy rain in the Brisbane River catchment area , the Wivenhoe Dam was spilling with resultant minor flooding downstream.
This video captures the dam's open flood gates and cascading flood water. Two of the five flood gates were open prior to sunrise, however this was reduced to one flood gate after sunrise.
The Wivenhoe Dam is a rock and earth-fill embankment dam with a concrete spillway across the Brisbane River in south east Queensland, Australia.
The dam structure is 59 metres (194 ft) high and 2,300 metres (7,500 ft) long and holds back a 1,165,000-megalitre (256×109 imp gal; 308×109 US gal) reservoir when at full capacity.
The dam is located about 80 kilometres (50 miles) by road from the centre of Brisbane.
The primary purpose of the dam is the supply of drinking water for the Brisbane and Ipswich regions.
In addition, the dam also provides an additional 60% flood mitigation capacity & hydroelectricity when required, and recreation use.
The impounded reservoir is called Lake Wivenhoe.
