Every four years, millions of people tune into news networks for real-time election results, but there is much more happening behind the scenes before the final call is aired. Audie Cornish talks with CNN Vice President and Political Director, David Chalian. He leads the team responsible for making high-stakes calls under intense pressure — all while ensuring accuracy, especially in today’s politically charged era. They talk about what goes into making the calls, and when we can expect a presidential election result. #CNN #News

Let’s remember that regardless of what side you’re on, the opposing party is just that the opposition, not the enemy.
I personally disagree with a lot of Harris’s policies but I truly agree with her statement that we have more in common than what we don’t agree on.

As Election Day arrives, people’s feelings of eagerness and anxiety can intensify. It’s normal to want to know the results, but it’s also important to make sure that when the results are announced, they’re accurate.

One will lose, half of the country will lose their minds and the other half will laugh at them and then we watch football .

Love Audie from her years at NPR’s ATC! Good to see her on CNN.

Wow, what a fantastic interview. This man gives SO much information and education on the topic and breaks it down in a really easy to understand way. Really, really impressive interview. Thank you for this! I didn't expect to be so engaged to every word!

Every state counts votes slightly differently. Some, like Colorado, allow election workers to begin counting absentee ballots in advance of Election Day, while in other states, like Illinois, the count can’t even start until the polling places close at the end of Election Day.

In addition, various communities report their results in different ways. Some may release preliminary results every so often while the counting continues, while others may wait until counting is fully complete before announcing any results.

As an European I expect the usual circus....perhaps a bit more extreme than the ones before....

It's both amazing and incredibly annoying that American politics has such sway over the rest of the world. I'm exhausted from this incredibly painful process, what's a more socially fair and just, economically viable, and politically feasible alternative to democracy that would not be as exposed to corruption and personality as we have to suffer now. Are there any smart enough people out there?

I don't care about projections. Just the real time results. What a waste of time. Learn patience people.

David Chalian is my favorite CNN person. I know he doesn't host a show but he is awesome.

We know what's going to happen this time, and he's not a sitting president. Stay calm everyone.

10%, they call several states the second the polls close. I also don’t recall any candidate ever having a 30 point lead in any state.

Why she keeps interrupting him before he finishes trying to make his point?

Even if the stats make sense to call a state, I think the News needs to stop doing it. I think it affects last minute voters decisions to even vote at all.
