Cheap, fast and economical, you can buy cars with all three if you go for a diesel! They're also generally pretty reliable too... if it wasn't for the expense of driving in ULEZ & the lack of noise a petrol engine gives you, they would be the ultimate form of car, given how much torque they're able to produce.

I have a 2011 335d E91 Touring with a TDI Tuning box fitted. No modifications done to the engine at all. It’s even more exciting to drive now with increased BHP and Torque. Absolutely love the car.

Best diesel I had was a Merc E320CDI W211 with the straight-6 3.2 litre turbo-diesel ...properly quick & had more torque than my current petrol 5.0 V8 CLS lol. A close 2nd was the D5 in the Volvo C70 D5 convertible we had ...adequately fast (the C70 is a heavy car) & even sounded good for a diesel.

As a 335d m-sport owner it’s does me proud to see it in the top of this esteemed list. I previously ad a based 335d as well. However, those mpg numbers are a bit inflated in all those cars. I can personally attest that prior to removing emissions the 335d real world number is closer to 36, and after deletion some examples can reach that 42 mpg. Also from that list I’ve only ever tested a Jaguar XF 2.0d (I know it was a 3.0d on the list but can’t find them in the US) and while I loved the interior but the stock 177hp and 430nm were too low for taste (even least LWRC than the BMW 328d). While it boasts 43mpg on the hwy it was more like 39-40. If I wasn’t so spoiled by my tunes and deleted base 335d however I might have actually bough that Jag.

My friend Daniel has a BMW 320d with 230hp a 6speed automatic and it is a black m-sport coupe! When he bought it only cost him 2500£ with 40000 miles!

Having had an Audi A4 2009 2l diesel mapped to just over 210bhp it was a fantastic car so I would be going for the A5 though I do like the Merc as well.

I own a 335d love it, great car, mine does 33mpg and I drive it very conservatively. If you have a heavy foot it will do 20mpg at best.
