Still valid 2 years later ... I have the plastic tool but no matter how much I squeezed with pliers I could not get it under the spring. Took a clamp and cut it to size as you demonstrated and with a little persuasion from pliers, it went right under. Thanks for the tip!

You rock! I had the proper tool, which seemed to just press against the spring - I couldn't go up size or down size. The hose clamp piece worked almost immediately.

This is simply outstanding. I'm having no luck at the firewall w a 3/4 fitting with the plastic tool. I'm going to try this method out and vice grip that band in place. This method here looks like it will work.
