Passage of time makes since. My class always says it's Friday. But when I started using "how many sleeps until " the event and using pictures above the date/visuals. That they understand.

I actually have the opposite situation of the teacher who felt calendar takes up too much time. I teach preschool in a full-day childcare center (10 hour days). I still very much see myself as a professional educator and take my role seriously. Lesson planning, observation, assessment, and spending time with my kids are some of my favorite things about teaching preschool! However, our days are LONG and we have to provide a lot for our kids. I believe in a short but effective circle time and calendar is part of this in my program. We have special markers for weekly occurrences like storytime with a library outreach reader and water play, so the kids can see when these are upcoming. We indicate days the center is closed, birthdays, teacher vacations, due dates of new baby siblings, etc.. We don't rely on calendar to be the children's only exposure to concepts either, and all this reassures me that It's appropriate for our long days.

I have over 26 years of experience and when I taught PreK I only had one class that understood the “calendar”. Other than when I did calendar I used for patterning and number recognition. I have yet to see another group of children understand “time” it was because we had certain events that happened on certain days weekly..

I'm starting teaching my own pre k class this fall. I keep throwing around the idea of calendar. Thank you for this video! It's a different perspective!

Thank you for your advocacy for ECE professionals! The examples of high quality experiences were really helpful. I've been trying to learn about play-based learning, and incorporating and guiding play.

I work in a very high profile center. It takes strength to convice parents and new teachers that calendars aren't permitted in the center. I have a calendar in my classroom. The only time we count or talk about it is when we are waiting for a special event like birthday, picture day, etc. Time is too abstract for students and memorization isn't understanding or learning. We do sing songs with the days of the week, but just for fun, not every day of as part of the circle time. Social emotional learning is more important at this age. Calendars are too hard for my non English speakers students. I have many languages in the classroom and I can't explain well enough in English to include then in a calendar discussion. Is calendar an inclusive practice in yoour classroom? If in doubt read about it, research. I think that colleges/universities waste time teaching teachers about theories without the practical knowledge. If it's not developmentally appropriate it shouldn't be allowed in the classroom.

So obviously you don't feel there is no way to teach the calendar in a fun way, but I respectfully disagree 🤷🏽‍♀️.
