Cooking is her love language. I love hearing her ask “How’s it look?” The only answer acceptable is “Great, thank you for making it” 🙂

I absolutely love that you call him Apa. There seems like so much mutual respect for culture and love languages in this relationship and I just adore that. What a beautiful example for your kids to grow up with. ❤

Tips from my Indonesian mom that I think pretty useful to make simple fried fish using almost any freshwater fishes:
1. Use lemon/lime water or vinegar both inside and outside the fish, let it for a few secs, then wash->pat to dry with clean cooking towel.

2. Make a paste from turmeric, coriander seeds, salt and garlic (make sure dont add water while making the paste)

3. Coat the fish using the paste. Both inside and outside, don't forget to make some coarse on both sides so the seasonings will seep in even more. Let it for at least 15 mins. The longer, the better (just put it inside the fridge if u want to let it longer.

4. Deep fry or fry using air fryer.

5. Serve it hot with sliced shallots and chilli with sweet soy sauce on the separate bowl.

My German mom taught me the 3s for fish, ‚ säubern, säuern, salzen‘ which translates to ‚clean, put something sour on it and salt it‘. I love the fact that cooking fish like this is universal!

I've grown up with wet fish markets my whole life and cloudy eyes and fishy smell (which starts as soon as it's dead) doesn't mean it's bad because the flesh sits on ice and is preserved quite well. The tips like fins and eyes "cooks" in the warm temperature which give off the smell. It's the same mass produced poultry 2nd rate of freshness, 1st being straight out of the sea/tank. This is why you don't sashimi but cook it well.

Side note… where are you ladies getting your nails done to look this natural and nice!? I have never liked mine after getting them “professionally” done.

Idea for the stuffing. My mom makes a similar dish but she stuffs it with garlic, green onions, cilantro, ginger, chili pepper, and lemon grass all minced up. Add some salt to the mixture for seasoning and then stuff it into the belly. It makes a nice mixture to have with the fish.

This is a famous dish in Egypt, and we usually eat the tilapia with rice as we Egyptians call it fisher men rice.

Cloudy eyes and any bad smell leads me to think it’s not good anymore.
