As a child and of being a teenager, I was lucky to have the opportunity to meet many Russians/Ukrainians during the USSR days (during 80s), they were frightened them to be heard speaking out. I really feel sad they have essentially gone backwards by 30 plus years. So sad to see.

the same trick is used by all governments to an extent. I've seen the same here in the USA, were not different from the rest. but the fact that most people are so used to it hear and refuse to realize the government keeps you living in fear is worrisome.

They aren’t afraid, the majority of them just don’t know the truth due to censorships. I’ve watched a lot of interviews with average Russians who are completely clueless, and the ones who do know get thrown in prison.

I have friends from Kaluga, i was told that one neighbor accused another neighbor of spreading falsehoods about the military and Putin, to have him removed because they had a personal scuffle, guess what, my friend hasn't seen the accused neighbor since then

I don't dispute the analysis, but, honestly, I've never seen a cheerful group of Russians, unless vodka was involved.

Even in the best of circumstances, they are a pretty dour bunch.
