Omg!! The hotel I work at we had an elderly couple staying with us who was is the process of moving back to the states. The husband ended up passing while they were there and we sometimes wondered if they knew if he was going to pass soon and if that was the reason for moving back. They were with us for about a month before his passing and honestly the whole staff was heartbroken because they were always so nice and heartwarming. They were like all of our adopted grandparents.

This happened to me. Her last days lasted 3 years, nurses would visit every day and we had to call her with reminders to take her meds.

Wouldn't it be nice if hospice facility could also have nice natural views, patios, etc.

Hospice patients sometimes request this. We typically give the establishment a heads-up, though, have transport on standby for afterward, and medical personnel do not leave the patient's side the entire time. From what I've seen, the patient's families are typically really good tippers bc they're grateful for the privilege of doing this

Plot twist: She's crying because her mother is outliving her money

Sadly. It does happen. Especially in a resort or hotel that has a good view.
Had it happen to me.
They just want to go in peace, rather than the conditions that they were living in. 😢

I work in hospitality and this actually happens more then you think. Lots of people come to die in Vegas. The stories I hear from security guards and maids are crazy.

My mom really wanted to go to a hotel while she was dying from cancer… she just really wanted to lay in bed and see the ocean one last time. Sadly she got too sick too fast for us to take her anywhere. I’m sorry that awkward and inconvenient for y’all, but damn what they’re going through is rough and you just want every last moment you have to feel special

For all the haunted comments, people who die peacefully with loved ones don't tend to be the haunting type

I work in an extended stay. This is so spot on. I’m dying.

The amount of people that use hotels as a cheaper alternative to nursing homes would shock most. And I am talking those with serious issues that needed medical supervision which the "family" expects the employees to take care of.

This happened at the last hotel I worked at. The lady was terminally ill, and she wanted one last trip to the location. I received a phone call from the room, and the husband on the other side, stated his wife wasn’t breathing. I called 911, ran back to my GM, and grabbed the portable defibrillator. She died, and I blamed myself for so long. Although, I knew it wasn’t my fault at all. It traumatized me so bad, that I started applying to other positions right away. I was so scared to answer the phone after that. I’m so glad I’m out of the customer service industry!

Hospice in the USA is geared toward keeping the patient in their own home with nurse visits.
This allows the family to care for their family member as much as possible, with staff on-call for assistance.
If someone is checking into a hotel for their last days, the hotel will be fine as long as they ask for a copy of that person’s DNR to keep on file.
If they don’t have one, it’s a huge liability

Had the most heartbreaking thing happen while working in housekeeping at a hotel. A woman in her early 40s had a random heart attack. Her husband found her passed out on the floor by the bathroom and called 911 right away. She was already gone before he even woke up, he was pacing the hotel floors after the paramedics took her away, overlooking the city calling people and the heartbreak in his face was so awful to see. To their knowledge she had been perfectly healthy and had no known heart problems. I had seen them check in the afternoon before and she looked so young, I was surprised she was even in her 40s.

I have heard about people realizing that it would be cheaper to live on a cruise ship ongoingly, than in assisted living.

My gosh. Did this actually happen? I feel so bad for the girl.

This is why hospice care exists… and there are some really nice ones! It kinda sucks that hotels are often cheaper though

I used to work in a hotel and one of the employees had been there for decades and loved it so much. When she was nearing the end of her cancer battle they brought her back to the hotel to live out her final days. Her family and hospice nurse would come in every day to see her. For the record, she had her own home, but the hotel was her happy place.

Had a resident at a huge convention hotel I worked in, she would push her grocery cart through the elegant lobby to come get her packages. When they shut down for the pandemic they had to maintain staff just for her.

Last visits are a reality. One of a married couple is dying. Sometimes they tell you, but mostly they don't. They want to see the beach for the last time. Then next time the surviving spouse books their favorite room alone. It's a heartbreaker..
