How To FIX a WASHING MACHINE that smells of Mould / Rotten Eggs

Hi, this video shows you how to fix a Hotpoint Aqualtis washing machine that smells of rotten eggs, mildew, mould, damp or stagnant water.
If you have already cleaned the door seal and the soap dispenser drawer and it still stinks then try cleaning the filter.
This process will be similar for different makes of washing machines. Always unplug the washing machine from the power supply first before undoing the filter and make sure you have a cloth to mop up the water that will leak out.
Many thanks Vince

I fixed my washing machines drain today. And I found using Dustpan to hold the drain water works really well.
Hope someone who is watching this video trying to fix their washing machine finds this comment useful.

Thank for making this video.

I love the commentary and how the guy isn't throwing up even though most of us would.

great video, the water in the sump will sit there between washes and may cause that terrible smell. However, after removing the debris from the filter you don't need to clean the area by hand: run a 90°C cycle with some (Soda crystals/washing machine cleaning powder/oxygen based detergent/soda bicarbonate - take your pick) and the boiling water will take care of the pump, sump, pipes, drum and tub. You may need to repeat several times. The smell is caused by bacteria and 90°C will kill them. Run a hot cycle every now and then and the problem should go away.
As told, make also sure you use the minimum dose of detergent recommended by the manufacturer. ;)

I took apart the filter housing as you instructed but found no gunk. What I did find was 12 coins and 2 pieces of paper 😊. It was so jammed that I had problems unscrewing the filter. Done a couple of washes since and no smell. Thanks for the video👍.

Being a professional appliance repairman, I suggest tight fitting rubber or plastic gloves, that putrid junk gets on your skin and CAN get into your system. It's BAD stuff and don't take a chance.

I tend to use an unfolded newspaper on top of a thin plastic sheet, the water gets collected by the newspaper and if you can pull out a sheet or two as you go the water soaks into the newspaper and the thin plastic stops it from soaking into the floor or tiles. When they are really bad then take them outside and flush the system using warm to hot soapy water. I have several wood blocks to lift the machine off the ground in order to catch the crud in a shallow tray. Great video.

My old washer never had this.but new one after 6 months started to smell and this cured it....it says to do this 6 to 8 times a year...It's quite easy.although was scared at first..

Boil wash with a cup of soda crystals, followed by another boil wash with a cup of white vinegar will really clean it out. :-)

Also a good tip pull machine out a bit and pour a bit of bleach in the down pipe a couple of times a year really helps out smelly machines .

I used a bottle washer with bristles to scrub out the slimy stuff after I washed the filter.

Make sure after every wash u leave the door ajar/open to allow ventilation, helps prevent smells, allows machine to dry out and prevent water mould growing also if your not using for a while remove drain and empty pump catch to remove residual moisture ❤
