This is the story of my unexpected adventure in Peru where I found myself draped in a poncho and shocked to learn how this indigenous woman made fabric using a human bone from a tourist. On an unusual day marked by hail, my tour guide led me to a village renowned for its handmade alpaca fur textiles. Upon entering their shop, the women swiftly outfitted me in a poncho and snug alpaca hat. I was here to learn about the process of making fabric from alpacas yet it soon became more than what I expected. As she was explaining the process, she handed out drinks and then started telling the story of how the bone she was holding was made from a tourist that was here a few weeks ago that drank the same tea…with a long pause, it was merely a joke, and the bone was, in fact, from an alpaca. This showcased their playful humor, and soon, I marveled at the array of exquisite pieces crafted from alpaca fur, relieved that they were not fashioned from unsuspecting tourists.

Oh my gosh! I nearly died when you told that story. First because I couldn’t figure out why she’d have human bone, and then because I am a huge, gullible NERD 😂
I love to knit, and for years my favorite fiber has been alpaca because of its softness, and the warmth of its hollow fibers. ❤

It's not alpaca fur, it's alpaca wool
