This one is going to be my new EDC. I'm quite fed up with modern and over complicated knife with dozens parts and screws. The Mercator seems to be the perfect "no bs" knife, just SIMPLICITY.🤩

It's very similar to an Okapi I had as a teenager in the early 70s. I've been looking for a replacement for almost 50 years. One is now ordered and on it's way. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Thanks for this interesting video of a classic knife. I live in Scotland, and have 2 variations. The first is identical to the "Black Cat" with the same logo, but is khaki rather than black. It has a stainless blade, and is specially produced for "Ray Mears Bushcraft". The second has the carbon blade, and a solid brass handle, with "Otter" stamping. I first saw one of these knives more than 60 years ago. It was owned by my Mum, who was a keen outdoorswoman, camper, kayaker etc. She had been given the knife by her Dad, who brought it home after having picked it up on the Western front during the First World war, having served as a cavalryman in France.

Hi Jake
Been watching your videos for a while now. Wanted to compliment you on the quality of the presentation and the quality of the content. Well done! I can't look at knives anymore without analyzing them like you do.

I have had my eye on this classic knife design for quite a while. Thank you for giving it your usual thorough treatment.

I have a black Mercator with a carbon steel blade. I keep it in my small game hunting, and fishing rucksack. I think it's a great knife for what I use it for.

I had one back in the 70s. Left it at the riverside after cleaning my catch. Went back later, and gone. Perhaps with the new versions I will pick one up again.. Great vids, CCE, thanks.

if you close the blade you can use the gap of the blade and fingerguard as a bottel opener

I thought it was pronounced Mer-cay-tor. I got mine in an Army/Navy store in Brooklyn during the summer of 1968, paid $7 for it. I carried that knife everywhere as a teen and into my adult years. A swell "safety net" for subway riding and tooling around Fun City. It got me outta some scrapes over the years. Kinda wish mine had the belt clip but I carried it in the ruler pocket of the overalls that I frequently wore. Holds an edge well and with a forceful flick of the wrist the blade would open and lock. Almost no wobble when open, it was boss. The finish is gone on mine and I don't carry it anymore but still have my Mercator. After almost 55 years it's still in good shape. My favorite lock-blade.

The OM is a fantastic knife, the brass handle version [of which I've owned 1 for years now] is my favorite !
I WISH they would do a Titanium version, I think it'd look AMAZING with heat anodized Ti handle !
GREAT video/content as always !

In the early 90’s, my brother in law gave me a red one that he was going the throw away. He didn’t know what it was and called it a “net knife” because it was embossed with marketing of Redden Net Company, Bellevue, WA. He thought it was a commercial fisherman’s knife for cutting nets. Anyway, I carried that as my EDC for MANY years. I finally broke the blade in half around 2018. It still sits in my garage and has been used along with a ball peen hammer as a wood chisel. I’ve since bought a new K55K black cat. These knives are absolute WORK HORSES! They have a special place in my heart and I plan to always own at least one.
I have a half dozen Opinel knives, but the Mercator cat is superior. I also own few Buck 110’s, but the Mercator cat in carbon steel is a better cutter. These knives just cannot be beat by any other affordable folder. The only knives that I consider to almost compete are some models of Victorinox SAK. Even then, the flat ground carbon steel blade of the Mercator is just the best if the affordable folders.

Mercator is actually Latin and a play on Kaufmann’s name (Kaufmann means merchant/trader and thus does Mercator in Latin)

Kaufmann heet Koopmann op Plattdüütsch

-----REDACTED-----

Mercator is actually Latin and translated into merchant which is what the makers name Kaufmann, translated to English was.
