A 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Ionian Sea on Friday morning, about 40 kilometers away from Zakynthos, a popular Greek tourist destination, damaging houses and public facilities at the harbor. Roads sank into the ground, leaving large cracks on the surface. Hotels saw their terraces falling during the tremor. Fortunately, no tenant was in the rooms because the peak tourist season is already over in early October. Experts say that powerful earthquakes happened every 10 years in Zakynthos, because it is located in an area with frequent seismic activities. 'This is where the African Plate and the European Plate collided. It's fair to say that Zakynthos is one of the areas with most earthquakes not only in Europe, but in the world, ' said Zisimos Logothetis, a seismologist in Greece.
