Our Top 3 Best Ways to Block a Punch in a Street Fight. Make sure that you watch to the end to see the BONUS TOP TIP to block and punch to your head.

How to block a punch in a street fight requires little effort, just the ability to generate power over a short distance. This week we discuss the how to block a heavy hook (or haymaker) punch from a bigger or stronger attacker in a street fight with 3 variations that we think work the best in the a real fight.

If you can get this technique right you will literally be able to follow up with a barrage of punches in order to protect your personal space.

How does this really work in a fight or in self defence? People tend to throw multiple punches in a barrage to overwhelm you in a street fight. So how does Wing Chun really answer this problem? Well in this video we borrow this concept and apply the notion of power generation to destroy heavy hooks.

In the first part of the video we introduce the concept of power generation and making it work for self defence or in a real fight. However, there is still a risk of your attacker throwing a second punch, especially if they are able to absorb your counter strike.

The second part of the video introduces a safer more reliable approach in which to use this technique. The key point to note is that you have to punch hard in order to slow to stop your attacker’s second punch. Only then can you actually fight back with some clear Wing Chun follow ups.

The third part of the video recaps the basic ideas of why we must attack. The key point to note is that practising in this method of training allows you the ability to understand how to find a simultaneous attack and defence when your arms are clinched with your attackers.

We have lots more videos on how to fight with Wing Chun. Please visit our channel. Better yet feel free to leave a comment or a suggestion of what you would like us to film for you. It does not have to be about Wing Chun it can be about any subject related to fighting, how to fight, Wing Chun techniques, or even Wing Chun vs other styles of martial arts. We are happy to pass on our knowledge and experience free of charge.

One of the few Youtubers that actually provide practical tips that can be used in real life situations, thank you for sharing!

Encompassing the 2 vital principles of ‘all the way out or all the way in’ and ‘defend & attack together’ are cornerstones to an effective fighting system. Always love Sensei Mark’s work. A superb channel.

That block with the right arm bent reminds me of the fifty two hand blocks movement. You shield your face with the arm shaped like a seven, using your elbows to block, or as a weapon. A block can also be a strike.

The shield allows for elbow thrust into the chest, head. It also allows for overhooks to lock the person down (to recover your senses if necessary) and for throws or takedowns.

I like the shield.

AGain- reminds me of KEYSI system... VERY good... :) it's a "natural" response that is defensive and OFFENSIVE at the same time close up.. LOVE IT.

I studied Kali for a while and I'm all about that shield. Keeps you from getting KO'ed and it's great for damaging the opponent's limbs. Really easy to grapple off that shield too. I'll try that shell during sparring.

Good video. Closing the distance as soon as possible solves most of the problems as long as you stay balanced.

Thank you. Excellent explanation as always, I like your use of gross motor skills such as a simple block and elbow turn.
I'd really like to see you demonstrate this technique but adding another onto it, such as weapon disarm
(i.e. in a real live situation, an empty-handed punch could turn out to be a blade)
Peace & Love!

I really enjoy your vids Dr Phillips. They contain great info for beginners. But.... You and i both know the only way you become a good fighter is by having alot of fights and suffer the consequences of our decision.

I love these techniques but I would be kinda worried about someone that isn't used to sparring or has limited self defense practices trying to execute the first two techniques. Are they meant for the average person? Targeting counter blocks from a stance for most people would appear to be difficult. The slapping seems to be the most effective for a newbie because it gives you distance as an option to make up for timing.
