Yes | Going for the One [1977]

Yes has been a constant in our lives-- one of the most exciting & surprising bands, always something new to discover and love...

Going for the One is the eighth studio album by English progressive rock band Yes, released on July 15th 1977 by Atlantic Records. After taking a break in activity in 1975 for each member to release a solo album, and their 1976 tour of the United States and Canada, the band relocated to Montreux, Switzerland to record their next studio album. During rehearsals, keyboardist Patrick Moraz left the group, which marked the return of Rick Wakeman who had left to pursue a solo career after differences surrounding Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973). In a departure from their previous albums, Going for the One, with the exception of the fifteen-minute "Awaken", features shorter and more direct songs without an overarching concept, and saw Yes record with new engineering personnel and cover artists.

Going for the One received a mostly positive response from music critics who welcomed the band's return to more accessible music. It was a commercial success, reaching No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart for two weeks and No. 8 on the US Billboard 200. "Wonderous Stories" and "Going for the One" were released as singles; the former went to No. 7 in the UK and remains the band's highest-charting single in the country. It was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) within a month for selling 500,000 copies. Yes supported the album with a six-month tour of the US, Canada and Europe. A remastered edition was released in 2003 containing previously unreleased tracks from the album's recording sessions.

I love this album. I have seen Yes play Awaken live on two occasions, one of them being with the lineup that made this album. Awaken is a piece that is amazing to experience live in concert. The middle section is especially beautiful.

This is an era ending album for Yes from 1971's the Yes album to this album here was an amazing run of albums that pushed prog rock past its limits and beyond and going for the one has some stunning classics from the beautiful turn of the century to the mighty closing epic of awaken not a dud track to be found and yes also proved prog rock wasn't dead in 1977 and this album was that statement

After this review, I got this album. It really is surprisingly good, much better than I thought. Very happy for your thoughts here.

When it came out, I listened with headphones on vinyl which forced you to pay attention, if you didn't have a changer. In my top 3. I had previously heard Fish Out Of Water, so appreciated Parallels. They opened with it on tour.

Turn of the Century and Awaken are masterpieces

The title track is the greatest song ever recorded by anyone. Parallels, Awaken, and Wondrous Stories are also excellent.

Have you thought about doing a video on Mirror to the Sky?

when you record a church organ solo from miles away off a telephone, its going to have noise.
