How to connect Arduino to an LCD tutorial

In this project we connect an LCD display to an Arduino to output a number of random messages on the display. It is sort of a modern version of the magic eight ball. We import the liquid crystal display library to have access to commands to control the display. A tilt switch is used to trigger the random messages.

Awesome vid! I really wanted to see the effect of the potentiometer on the brightness of the LCD since I didn't have one myself, thanks for showing that off Tom. On a side note, it will take a while before any of us can quit our day job and make a living of YouTube, but perseverance and effort will hopefully be rewarded!

On my display, 1602A, Vo (pin 3), just needs a variable resistor to ground to control contrast. A direct connection to ground produces maximum contrast. The A & K (pins 15 & 16) pins are used with a pot and a 5 volt connection to adjust the backlight brightness. Also, I had to connect the Read pin to ground or I had no display at all. There seems to be a lot of confusion on the arduino forum about these 3 items. Reading the data sheet cleared everything up in my case.

Does it matter if I connect it in other digital pin? I'm gonna use those selected pins you've mentioned in 4x4 keypad, can you pls tell me if there is an alternative way to connect those pins without getting rid of 4x4 keypad connection? Thank you. Pls answer
