Listen to my podcast, Cinema of Meaning:

Cinema of Meaning is a Nebula Original podcast, which means that Nebula is the only place where you can listen to episodes a week early and ad-free, and where you can get access to our monthly bonus episode.
This is where we offer community services in the form of a private Discord server where you can become more involved, make suggestions and discuss movies with us and other patrons. All donations made here will serve the specific purpose of covering our editing costs. We’re not really looking to make a profit, that’s why the bar for entry is so low, lower than Patreon recommends actually. You can also get access to the bonus episodes here if, for whatever reason, you don’t want to bother with Nebula, but personally; I’d recommend just getting in at the lower tier and check out the bonus stuff over on Nebula, much cheaper. Either way, we just want to ensure we can keep the show alive, because it’s been a lot of fun, and we hope to be able to keep it going as we move into 2023 and beyond!

If there is a group of people I would like to know in real life, it's the people watching your videos. Something magical and wholesome is happening in the comment section I swear

Since you read every comment. Just thought I’d let you know that yours is hands down my favourite channel on YouTube. I find so many of your videos utterly inspiring and beautiful. I showed my dad, he’s a sociology professor at Cambridge university, a few of them and now watching your videos and discussing them is a great bonding experience for the two of us. Thank you. You’re awesome

Hell yeah my friend. So glad you get to work on these videos. They have made a huge difference in my struggles with anxiety and existential malaise. I love that you remain optimistic about humanity. I do too, though in recent years the ugly side feels more and more common. Your essays always leave me with a sense of hope and comfort. Thank you and happy new year!

Every single one of these that I’ve not yet seen is now on my immediate to-watch list. Thank you, always, for the compassion, thoughtfulness, and deep humanity you bring with your perspective and voice.

Hi Tom, I wanted to add my comment to the list and tell you how much your videos have helped me. In the last few years I have experienced a lot of scary moments in my life, in the form of severe postpartum depression and now a very challenging second pregnancy, and your essays have been grounding and deeply comforting to me. Thank you for your hard work and for sharing your talents with all of us. You've made a hugely stressful time in my life a lot more palatable with your unique perspective.

Your videos truly are inspirational works. Thanks to them I've been willing to keep going and to find richer meaning in what I'm doing with my life and the art I consume. Thank you so much and have another great year!!

Grateful for this channel and your effort to nurture optimism in yourself and others. It really is so cool to be blending a love of movies with filling the world with positivity.

Dear Tom,
I stumbled upon your videos as a source of assignment I had about nihilism which you talked about After Life. I think it was a great analysis of the theme and character and I was hooked up with your other videos like the multiverse one and false icon one. I am grateful that I made that assignment myself and actually finished the video instead of skimming or copying my friend's work. You are an excellent qualitative content creator.

Thank you Tom.

Your Feeling the Void video brought me to tears just like Everything Everywhere All At Once did. Thank you so much for your heartfelt words, in depth videos, and dedication to bringing a spark of hope to humanity.

These videos are magical…it is in your words and mastery of the English language, you warm tone, your acknowledgment of the presence of negativity in the world, in your beautiful way of showing that often a sliver lining exists within the negativity, and in how you choose to work through the disparity and find optimism. Thank you. I listen to the videos to remember that I still have the capability to feel, deeply. I am not dead inside, but rather I am typically emotionally blunted. Thank you; your videos have created halcyon experiences for me, and I will continue to watch.

RRR is probably my fave movie. I think you're right, Western cinema has lost it's sense of fun in favour of some nebulous idea of "realism." And this one was just fun, and larger than life, and full of imagery I'm never gonna forget.

My other favorites I've seen are probably The Northman, Nope, Del Toro's Pinnochio and Banshees of Inisherin

Everything everywhere all at once is hands down the movie of the year, perfection on so many levels. Nothing comes even close. I enjoyed the Northman a lot but the Daniels stole my heart ❤️

There’s something about your videos which films me with warmth and nostalgia, even when talking about things I have no experience with. It feels like sitting down with a grandparent and hearing them reminiscing about things which you know nothing about yet they make them feel so familiar and intimate regardless.

I subscribed to Mubi late this year (mostly to watch Lars Von Trier's 'The Kingdom series, which as an American with a good portion of Danish ancestry, I thoroughly enjoyed). Streamed 'Decision to Leave' last night after catching this live and must say I am a BIG FAN of Korean cinema!

Tom, I’m so happy you created a best of 2022 video. I constantly go to your page and work my way through your backlog to take in as much from you as I can. You have such a deep knowledge of cinema and philosophy, and you articulate it so beautifully. You have inspired me to think harder and deeper about films, to not run away from challenging ones and instead think of why it challenges me. Your podcast with Thomas is a dream come true as well. Cheers to the new year.

Just yesterday, I watched, Three Thousand Years of Longing, and I loved it! Tilda Swinton is wonderful. Being a storyteller myself, I resonated closely with the main themes of storytelling and elevating people into new awareness, appreciation of themselves and the world around them, and thereby seeing and experiencing the world anew.
The cinematography and visual effects of colour and dissolution of elements in the 3D realm, really took me into the visceral experience of other worlds.
I loved it, and it made me want to explore how to produce movies and/or television shows. It is a Kennedy/Miller production, and no doubt, all of that experience of building the detailed worlds of Mad Max and Babe, has paid off in the set pieces in this movie. 4 stars.
