Behind The Scenes Of Katie Couric's Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Katie has always been vigilant about her health. Ever since her husband Jay died of stage four colon cancer in 1998, Katie has been a cancer screening advocate, sharing information about and helping to normalize seemingly intimidating procedures that can detect cancer early and save lives (you might recall Katie’s on-air colonoscopy?). When Katie realized she had missed a mammogram, she decided to take listeners into the procedure room with her to understand why it’s important for women like Katie, who has dense breasts, to get not only a mammogram but also an ultrasound. But then, Katie gets the news that no one wants to get. On this very personal episode, Katie — with the help of her doctors and daughters — takes listeners behind the scenes of her cancer diagnosis, treatment and long term plan. Katie also introduces listeners to cancer survivor and activist, Michele Young, who beat the odds and is changing the breast cancer screening system. Also, check out Ellie and Carrie Monahan’s podcast, All Each Other Has, wherever you get your podcasts.

If it's any consolation to any woman out there going through this, my grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer at 70 and had a double masectomy and is now 94 years old and still going strong 💪

Thanks, Katie! I too have dense breasts and need ultrasounds after mammograms. I too am overdue because of the pandemic. I have my appointment next week. Grateful for your "teachable moment!"

I will always remember your time in Miami and still think, "I remember her when." You're now running on a loop in my brain because I'm scheduled for a biopsy on 11/1. I had my second mammogram on 10/21 so there won't be any wasted time. Thank you, Katie, for your willingness to not be quiet!

Extremely lucky that she can have the kind of "Concierge Care" that she has. I hope she addresses how difficult it is for more average people, many of whom live in "medical care deserts, " and thus do not catch it in time, or average people who are only given a mammo. Not only do they not have their Dr. present, they have to wait days, maybe weeks to get notified that there might be a problem, and then they wait for an appointment.

Had my mammogram on time, they said everything is fine, 3 months later, during a CT scan for something else, my mass was found. Had ultrasound, and waited another 4 weeks to get biopsy. Still waiting to see oncologist. It has been 7 months since mammogram. I would still not know was it not for the CT scan since I don't feel the mass. It is big enough that it should have been seen on the mammogram. I might be dead before I even have surgery.

My wife had Cervical Cancer almost 25 years ago. She is alive today, because of a cyclotron, and what was then, state of the art Medicine. It took my 401K, my retirement, my savings, and everything I could sell, but she's alive. She never got well, and still has intestinal problems, but that was as good as it got, back then.
Just listening to your Journey has been a wonder, and I am so grateful for your experience. It means that hope has arrived, if we can just figure out how to pay for it.
Oh, and while you're at it, could you look into the incidence of Breast Cancer in Men? I haven't been able to find much, but your contracting of the disease has made me curious. I know that, as a eunuch I'm at higher risk, but I honestly wouldn't recognize a change in my breasts, if one occurred. Since the survival rate of Men, whose cancer has spread is about 22%, maybe I should care more than i do.

Yeah, my sister got cancer explosion right after the booster shot, after bumps develop as a reaction to it. Many are reporting the same.
