In a rare televised address from the Oval Office, US President Joe Biden made his first public comments on why he dropped out of the presidential race.

The 81-year-old also endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris to unite their fellow Democrats and the country.

Biden said he would level with the American people, and tell the truth, but did he answer the big question?

While the the president does not technically fall under the Hatch Act, unlike staffers & civil servants, most presidents try to follow the contours of the law. So that is my guess why he was restrained in his praise of Harris. Endorsing, praising, and nakedly campaigning from the Oval Office (or WH in general) would be pretty tacky. The public office and the personal campaign tend to have a wall of separation.

Outside of the Fox News bubble, the speech was taken quite well. I appreciate an outside perspective, but you guys really misinterpreted completely.

The speech also gained a lot of traction online in the US, Not only did it overshadow Trump’s rally that day, it also overshadowed Netanyahu’s speech at the Capitol. So yes, while most Americans don’t tune in live like in decades past anymore, Americans still very much consumed it. Just in a more online way.

Disappointing from the BBC. Surely you were aware of the broadcasting talents of King George VI who also possessed the barrier of a speech impediment, namely a stammer or stutter. Often a lifelong impediment, but with training and practice will diminish, but not disappear. Is it desirable to criticize the delivery of the Prez' speech re 'cherry/cherish' or every stammer and not just the content. Content is fair game, not a disability which has been overcome with great effort - that's really petty. Do better.
