The Great Collapse of the Roman Empire. Separating Myth from Truth

The roughly forty years from 380-420 are the most consequential in Church History. During the time one world order will fall, reduced to ashes, but from the ashes – the Christendom of the Middle Ages would be born, and this period presents a warning call to our time – a trumpet blast revealing exactly what is to come. Perhaps there will be lessons learned that can help us to do better than our ancestors in the Church and in society.

In part 17 we saw the creation of the Bible today we meet the individual that gave us the Latin Vulgate Jerome, and his contemporaries Augustine of Hippo, Ambrose of Milan, and John Crysostom, called the Golden Mouthed.
The characters of their past – Constantine the Great, Eusebius, Athanasius, had given our cast of characters a world which was decidedly Christian. The Roman empire while still unified in law had continued to live as separate worlds, the eastern empire influenced by their sassanid neighbors under Shapur II, fed by North African Grain, and dominated by the major Christian centers in Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria. and in the west, Rome was a world away – largely disconnected from these centers, a world dominated by immigration issues and the flow of many people groups collectively called Goths flowing into the Roman Empire – just a shell and name of its former self – across the Danube into the South.
