As a leader, one of the most critical decisions you’ll ever make is determining what you stand for—and what you stand against. In this video, I share a powerful metaphor from Dante's Inferno that highlights the importance of standing for something meaningful in life.

In Inferno, a man realizes that the person he’s become has drifted from the person he’s meant to be, and to get back on track, he must go through nine stages of hell. Outside the first gate, there are translucent figures, known as shades, who march behind a banner that says...nothing. These are the people who never stood for anything in life, and their eternal punishment is to follow a banner of emptiness.

Whatever you do, don’t be a shade. Stand for something. Lead with purpose and conviction.
