In this month's edition of the Patreon AMA Sessions, we consider a fascinating discussion from the group discord about how Nietzsche's Aesthetical Ideal compares with Evola's Aristocratic Soul. In the process, we find that both Nietzsche and Evola were in agreement in their objections to the modern world but for different reasons. While Evola dismissed the cliches of progress as signs of the Kali Yuga or Dark Age, Nietzsche interpreted modern western culture to be an extreme case of the Socratic Civilization which Socrates opposed to the Hellenic or Aesthetic Civilization.

Very interesting analysis. The only thing I would add is that Nietzsche, at least in his later works (Zarathustra onward), is also explicitly pro-hierarchy. In The Antichrist he praises the ancient Hindu law for preserving the fundamental types of mankind as separate castes with their own respective place in society. Nietzsche and Evola had a general agreement in this area, but the clear difference is that Nietzsche's view lacked Evola's metaphysical foundation; Nietzsche's ideal aristocrat was simply a more complete, perfected manifestation of Will to Power.

Quick question: you mentioned that kant in critique of judgement talks about universality of art. It's been a while but feels like since the taste has such an idiosyncratic trajectory it isn't that Beethoven is objectively good but just that we feel that way when we experience beauty. Thoughts?
